One of the first steps you need to take before your write your eBook is to decide who is going to be your target reader. Not everyone will want to read the eBook you write.
No matter how well you write, no matter how current the information, no matter how important your resources, the topic of your book is not going to interest the world. If you write about snakes, for example, most people will never pick up the book even if it has wonderful illustrations.
To save yourself time, money and energy when you market your eBook, you should be able to describe your ideal reader.
The people who will purchase your eBook are only those interested in your subject matter. You need to figure out who those folks are because the better you can identify the target market for your eBook, the more you will focus your writing on what appeals to them and drives them. As a result, your content will be better.
Ask yourself:
What are their most challenging problems?
What keeps them up at night?
How can your expertise help solve those problems?
What motivates them to take action - income, status, change?
What are their values?
Does what they want match your areas of expertise?
What do they want versus what do they need to accomplish their goals?
What benefits can you give them?
What is their gender, age, education level?
Answers to these questions will help you define the niche for your eBook. As you write the content, you will easily be able to address that niche because you understand their concerns.
Once you can picture your target reader, you are ready to outline your content material and develop a clear marketing message. Your marketing message for your eBook describes the purpose or mission of your eBook. It tells the reader what sets you apart from other authors and coaches and advisors. Your message has to answer the questions:
Why should they read what you have written?
What sets you apart from the competition?
What is your expertise?
A simple way to figure out the answer to these questions is to write down every reason you can think of as to why someone would want to read your eBook. Brainstorm with a business associate or a good friend. Keep your customer in mind.
Your goal is tell your reader how your eBook will benefit them. You may want to list all the bonuses and services you provide but only if they directly relate to how your reader will benefit. This is not the place to toot your own horn.
By now it is probably clear to you that another benefit of knowing your target reader will be a huge help for your marketing plans when the eBook is complete.
