Useful Research Tool #1 : MyStickies

notepin.pngI came across an interesting so-called “web 2.0″ app over the weekend … MyStickies.com - I’ll let the developers explain it.

MyStickies is a javascript script that can draw notes on web pages and tag them. The notes are saved to an online account and whenever you come back to the page, the notes will load back up.

You can utilize a bookmarklet or even better, if you are a Firefox user, they offer an extension plugin.

I like it because my organization skills are not up to par (aka I have a messy home office with scraps of bits and pieces that I’ll get to one day). I also tend to visit many, many websites in my researching duties. And MyStickies keeps me just that little bit better organized.

Now imagine you’re an information publisher researching your new product. You do the rounds of all the sites. You jot down the urls to visit later - because you’ll always visit it later you say to yourself. And when you eventually do: what did I come here again for? Ummm … and that’s where MyStickies comes in handy.

From the well-respected tech magazine, Australian PC User…

MyStickies is a web-based application which puts bookmarks on steroids. It’s a cross between Post-It Notes, bulletin boards and bookmarks. MyStickies lets you place notes on web pages, so that when you revisit a page it’s easy to figure out why you bookmarked it … your free MyStickies account provides a central place for viewing all your sticky notes.

    Hey Martin,

I used MyStickes for a few months. I had been hoping for exactly that technology for awhile — a way to bookmark a webpage with notes that popup when you revisit the site, reminding you of why you bookmarked it, for instance.

My problem with it, and the reason I’ve now disabled the Firefox extension, is there are websites which just don’t hold the sticky note. I particularly noticed that Firefox or MyStickies (I blame MyStickies) often puts a sticky on the wrong tab when you’ve got multiple tabs open.

Weird. I’ll check back as I see the service progresses…which also hasn’t happened really over the last several months.

Brandon - Thanks for dropping in and having your say.

I got about 40 or so Stickies (I use FF as well) going and so far so good - but it’s good you let me and the readers know of possible problems.

I’ll try to get in touch with MyStickies and get a response from them - it’ll be a shame though if it fell by the wayside because it’s a damn good idea.
